TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE
A man was visiting a famous tourist spot during a bright sunny day. As he was walking around, he saw a well-dressed man sitting beside a lake. At first the tourist thought the man was fishing. However, as he observed closely, he could not see any fishing equipment. He got curious. He approached the man sitting beside the lake and asked, ”Sir, what are you doing here?”
The man said, “Can’t you see? I am fishing.”
“But Sir, you do not have a fishing rod or a net?”
“Well, those were used during olden days. Now I use new technology. See this mirror?”
“Really, how do you catch fish using a mirror?”
“Well, if I have to teach you this new technique, it will cost you 200 bucks”
The tourist could not believe his ears. Just 200 bucks for a new technique on fishing! He pulled out his wallet and handed over 200 rupees.
The man pocketed the money.
He said, “Let me show you how to catch fish using a mirror. First you pick a lake with lot of fish. Get there on a sunny day. Take out your mirror. As you see a big fish, point the mirror towards it and reflect the sun light onto the fish. Once the light hits the fish hard, it would not know what to do. Then you catch it.”
“Really. That sounds so nice. Can you please tell me how many you have caught so far today?’
The man smiled, “Actually, you are the tenth one.”
We live in world where we come across many such con men. Many take us for a ride. We find many offers that are too good to be true. Or we hear stories of people who fall prey to scams. We become sceptical of offers that are too good to be true.
But at the same time, there are also real offers that we can pass by because we doubt, or we fail to grab them. One such offer is an offer of peace by Jesus. He says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” (John 14:27, The Bible).
We know that in this world, we have a peace when we have good bank balance, when we are healthy, we can have a sense of peace when all the things are working for us. But what Jesus is offering is a peace that is unlike all of this. He can give peace, which the world can’t give or take away.
As with any offer, it is important to consider who is giving the offer. For starters, Jesus Christ is a person from history. In fact, he divided history into two, BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini – or In the year of our Lord). In his poem, One Solitary Life, James Allen Francis says, “all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that were ever built, and all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon the earth as powerfully as has this one solitary life.”
Jesus is a credible person who can make such an offer. Again, as we look at the offer, it is about Peace. Men and women down through the centuries have spoken about this peace that they have experienced as a gift from Jesus. I too have experienced this Peace during challenging situations, during the loss of my dear ones, when I have faced financial and health challenges.
Would you like to taste this peace? Perhaps you are facing situations that put tremendous pressure on you. All you must do is ask Jesus for peace. He can bring peace to your troubled heart. I am not suggesting that all your problems will vanish, but rather you can experience peace during your problems. In time, he will change your problems or change you to take on your problems. Remember peace is not the absence of problems but the presence of Jesus in the midst of your problems.
